A hotel reward should be judged against a stay you would realistically book. The most expensive suite on the website is not a useful cash comparison if you would otherwise choose a standard room at another property. Start with your needs, then compare the total cost and conditions of the available options.
Use the same dates and room requirements
Match occupancy, bed arrangement, access requirements and cancellation flexibility. If an award room cannot accommodate your group or a necessary feature is only on request, resolve that before valuing the points. A confirmed suitable room is worth more than an uncertain upgrade.
Build a complete-cost table
For each option, note room cost, taxes, mandatory fees, breakfast, parking and transfers. Check the specific program and property terms; do not assume an award waives a fee simply because another brand does. Include the cost of reaching the places you intend to visit.
As a hypothetical example, three nights at $240 per night plus $90 in total required charges cost $810. An equivalent award costing 90,000 points plus $90 avoids $720, or 0.8 cents per point. If the cash stay includes breakfast and the award does not, subtract the breakfast cost you would actually pay before drawing a conclusion.
Location can reverse the result
A points hotel on the edge of a city may require daily taxis or a long transit ride. A smaller cash hotel near your activities might leave more usable time and a lower overall bill. Map both routes, including the return after dinner and the airport transfer, before choosing.
Compare flexibility separately
Read cancellation deadlines, no-show charges, points-return rules and any cash component. If you are considering a split stay, count the time and expense of moving hotels. Changing rooms to maximize a promotion can consume much of a short break.
Make the choice with your own constraints
Using points can be sensible even below an aspirational valuation when it preserves cash for a trip you value. Paying cash can be sensible when the award is inconvenient or uses a balance you have a clear near-term plan for. Neither choice needs to win a points competition.
Before departure, confirm the reservation directly and repeat any essential access request. Keep a record of the booked room and terms. A points balance is a planning resource; the successful outcome is a comfortable stay that supports the journey.
