The Art of Leaving Room in an Itinerary

Unscheduled time is not empty time. It allows a journey to respond to weather, conversation, energy and the discoveries that planning could not predict.

Protect one open block

Leave a morning or afternoon free early enough in the trip that you can use it well. Treat it as real itinerary space instead of a place to add the activities that did not fit elsewhere.

Keep a short possibility list

Save a few nearby ideas without assigning them to a day. When the open block arrives, choose based on how you feel and what you have learned about the destination.

Measure the trip differently

A journey does not become more valuable because every hour is occupied. The conversations, repeated walks and pauses between landmarks often become the part you remember most clearly.
