Through the Lens

Travel Photography With Respect

Travel Photography With Respect

Travel photography is a relationship between the photographer, the subject and the place. Before raising the camera, ask whether the image depends on someone else’s privacy, work, ceremony or vulnerability.

Ask in a way that allows no

A clear gesture or polite question should leave the other person free to decline. If the answer is uncertain, lower the camera. Extra care is appropriate with children, religious practice and private spaces.

Keep the setting honest

Include context and avoid captions that guess at a person’s story. Record names and details only with permission. If a location is sensitive, consider whether identifying it could cause harm or unwanted pressure.

Know when to observe

Some moments are better experienced without a photograph. Restraint can build trust, deepen attention and make the images you do create more meaningful.
